SoCal News: New Biking and Walking Options Coming!

Impressive projects are in the works for several SoCal counties, including progress on infrastructure projects and accessibility of bike share transportation options. Orange County is expecting to launch construction for a four-mile stretch of parking protected bike lanes that will be a connector for the cities of Garden Grove, Santa Ana and Westminster. The $3.5M project will commence in 2019 and is expected to be up and running in 2020. The project garnered a lot of community support. In 2017, SCAG’s Go Human conducted a temporary demonstration project called Redefine Hazard Avenue to gain feedback on portions of the stretch.

The City of Riverside launched a bike share program in late 2018, which includes 55 electric pedal assist bikes. The Bike Riverside program provides options for $2 single trips, $6 day use and $20 monthly passes by signing up online or at the kiosk. The bike share is a great complement to the E-scooters that arrived to the City as well. In December 2018, the City of Riverside, Go Human and community partners teamed up with Bird and Lime to deliver a demonstration event on scooters. The Riverside Active Transportation Network conducted a walk audit to capture walkability/bikeability needs of the downtown core where investments are being considered. City of Riverside plans to invest more infrastructure to support and meet the safety needs of cyclists and scooter riders, which are expected to rise with new programs coming to the City.
