Our Structure

The Safe Routes to School National Partnership's work and vision is guided by our Steering Committee, our partners and Safe Routes to School supporters.  Our governance structure was created to ensure that a diverse group of national, state and local organizations involved in Safe Routes to School provide critical input and guidance to our leadership and staff.  We have several key aspects of our structure.

  • Our Governance:  First adopted in September 2006, our governance structure outlines how we operate within another nonprofit organization, the makeup and responsibilities of the Steering Committee, and our decision-making process.

  • Our Steering Committee:  The Steering Committee includes up to 21 members and consists of broad representation from groups that are associated with Safe Routes to School programs. Steering Committee seats are held by organizations as opposed to individuals, and membership is structured to include representatives from national, state and local organizations. 

  • Our Strategic Plan: Our 2011-2015 Strategic Plan was adopted by our Steering Committee on November 2, 2010. Nearly 1,000 people were interviewed, completed a survey, attended our annual meeting and/or provided written comments on the draft strategic plan.  This feedback was essential in allowing us to hone in on the most important goals, focus areas, objectives and tactics that will ensure a strong and sustainable Safe ROutes to School movement and a world in which children can safely walk and bicycle to school and in daily life.  An Executive Summary of the Strategic Plan is also available for viewing.

  • Our Annual Meeting: Once each year, usually in conjunction with the Safe Routes to School National Conference or the ProWalk/ProBike conference, we host an annual meeting.  This half-day event is an opportunity to learn about the National Partnership's work and plans for the future, and for Safe Routes to School advocates to learn and network.
