A joint or shared use agreement is a formal agreement between two groups, for example a school district and a city or county, which allows for the use of public property, like a school playground or field, after regular school hours. I recently had the opportunity to speak to Mayor Carolyn Thompson of Elkton, Tennessee. Elkton has fewer than 20,000 residents and is about twenty-five miles north of Huntsville, Alabama. Elkton has one elementary school with 327 students in pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. They also do not have any sidewalks in their town.

During the month of November we are reminded to give thanks. I have Facebook friends who are making an effort to post something they are thankful for every day of the month. While I like this idea, I think we should also make an effort to thank others -- to let them know we appreciate them.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this one is no exception. This is me on my 16th birthday. Yes, I asked for and was given a bicycle for my 16th birthday. I also got a car that year, but if I showed you a picture of it (a late 70’s chevette) you might see why I look so happy to have my new bicycle (and that super 90’s era helmet).

International Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 3, 2012.
