Passing the Torch in New Jersey

Laura TorchioSpring brings a new season for the State Network Project in New Jersey. As you have likely heard, I will be leaving the Safe Routes to School National Partnership this month. But like I welcome the warmer and longer days, I also look forward to new opportunities and stronger partnerships. I am moving onto a program at Montclair State University that still has ties to the SRTS movement.

NJ Team Action

A-C-T! (clap, clap, clap) I-0-N! (clap, clap, clap) -- I can’t help but launch into cheer when my team does well! Yes, the NJ “bike/ped” team players have picked it up and are going for the win. With some SAFETEA-LU funding still unobligated, new funding rules under MAP-21, and emergency recovery efforts from Superstorm Sandy, the NJ Team huddled and called their plays. Here’s a rundown of some recent Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets and Transportation Enhancements TEAM ACTION in NJ.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation Healthy Schools Program in NJ

Alliance for a Healthier GenerationThe Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, was formed in 2005 as a response to the dramatic increase in prevalence of childhood obesity across the nation. Currently, as many as 1 in 3 students in most states meet the criteria for overweight or obese.

ProWalkProBike: ProNewJersey

Laura TorchioNew Jersey’s Zealous Nuts: The 2012 ProWalkProBike: Pro Place conference brought together hundreds of “zealous nuts” who are dedicated to people walking and bicycling more often.  Fred Kent, founder of Project for Public Spaces, opened the conference by declaring,

Bikes and Feet on Every Street in NJ!

They’re Back! To School, That Is. New Jersey Safe Routes to School Resource Center makes it easy for communities to get active, get healthy, and get back to school. With SRTS Regional Coordinators from eight Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) throughout New Jersey ready to help, kicking off Safe Routes to School programs in your town is within reach.

Partner Powers: New Jersey

Superheros Among Us: Last week I had the pleasure to attend a New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids strategic planning meeting where I got to meet many of New Jersey’s real life superheroes. If you were there, you know that as part of the introductions, we all got to declare what our super power would be if we had one. They were all noble.
