Bike to School Day is just around the corner on May 8th. Are you in, North Carolina?
Across North Carolina there are so many great Safe Routes to School programs in place at hundreds of schools. You can visit most any of those schools now and see bikes being parked at bike racks and parents leading kids in their walk to and from school.

In 2005, North Carolina began a new era in how it viewed bicycles and pedestrians on its roadways. North Carolina Department of Transportation welcomed Safe Routes to School funding and created a specialty license plate that allowed its residents to show their support for bicycle and roadway safety.

In North Carolina this year, thanks to the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Safe Routes to School Coordinator Ed Johnson, the waters are “turning over” for Safe Routes to School and the prioritization of bicycle and pedestrian safety in a variety of ways and partnerships.

Answering this is easy. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership works to make changes to the built environment so that generations of children can bicycle and walk to school. Not only is it a great way to improve children’s lives, but it reminds adults about the simple joys of walking and bicycling with their family, friends and neighbors.
