Everyone travels. Whether it is for work, school or play, how we as individuals and as a society travel has impacts that go far beyond the seemingly simple and routine act of going from one place to another. This common trait provides an ideal intervention point for public health practitioners.

As we all head back to school, it is exciting to see more and more children and families walking and bicycling to school each morning.

I often think of this business mantra each day as I step on the scale, track my calories and log every minute and mile of physical activity as I pursue a healthier lifestyle. (And apologies to my Facebook friends who are tiring of my new found apps and the postings to cheer me on!)

Just this morning I was enjoying my favorite aspect of walking to school with my boys – the occasional grabbing of my hand by my 1st grader. I was soaking it up, I know these moments are fleeting as I watch my 3rd grader walking up ahead at his own pace, in his own thoughts.

We started growing seeds for our garden over the weekend and as I sat down to write my blog this week I was struck by how working to grow awareness and engagement for Safe Routes to School is similar to the growth of our seedlings.

Partnerships…
…a good thing to be writing about on Valentine’s Day. I guess you could say I am the Safe Routes to School National Partnership’s resident matchmaker. While I can boast of several marriage outcomes from my partnership recommendations over the years, my role here at the National Partnership has yet to involve dating suggestions.
