New Report: North Carolina - Writing the Next Chapter of Its Transportation Legacy

The Safe Routes Partnership has released a new report, “North Carolina: Writing the Next Chapter of Its Transportation Legacy”. The report considers the state of walking and bicycling infrastructure in North Carolina, citing frightening, inequitable safety statistics for non-motorized transportation, with state funding levels for needed bicycle and pedestrian improvements falling far below what is needed or what is promised through state-level policy. The contents of the report are particularly timely given the arrival of the newest NC General Assembly in Raleigh. Our state’s legislators must consider the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists in our state. As noted in the report, the General Assembly should work with NCDOT to speed up expenditure of existing bicycle and pedestrian funding, particularly in the Safe Routes to School program, and set aside a portion of Transportation Alternatives Program funds specifically for these needs. The report is available on the Safe Routes Partnership’s website here.
